BIO

Dr. Janelle Joseph is an award-winning Assistant Professor in Critical Studies of Race in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto. She is Founder and Director of the Indigeneity, Diaspora, Equity, and Anti-racism in Sport (IDEAS) Research Lab and author of the text Sport in the Black Atlantic: Cricket Canada and the Caribbean Diaspora. Dr Joseph’s SSHRC-funded research focuses on decolonizing sport studies, anti-racism movements among athletes and educators, intersectionality within African diasporas, physical cultures including dance and martial arts, and leadership.

Dr. Joseph was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 2022 and named a Fellow of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (2023). In 2023 she also earned the Canadian Association of Leisure Studies Emerging Leader Award and Canada International Black Women Excellence designated Dr. Joseph one of Canada’s Top Black Women to Watch (2023). Dr. Joseph is committed to Black belonging, refusal of borders, and social justice solidarities.
