Dr. Peter A. Newman is Full Professor, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, and Faculty Research Program Specialist in the Research Services Office. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and Inaugural Fellow of the Society for Social Work Research. Dr. Newman held the Canada Research Chair in Health and Social Justice from 2007 to 2018, an Early Researcher Award from the Ministry of Research and Innovation, Ontario, from 2007 to 2011, and the RBC Chair in Applied Social Work Research from 2006 to 2008. He is a co-founder and research advisor of the VOICES-Thailand Foundation (Chiang Mai) and Project Director of a SSHRC Partnership, MFARR-Asia: Mobilizing for a Research Revolution to Ensure LGBTIQ Inclusion in Asia, in Thailand, India, Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan, the Philippines and Singapore.


Dr. Newman has been awarded over 11 million dollars in continuous, external PI-research funding. With over 190 refereed publications and over 17,000 citations, he has been recognized as among the most highly cited scholars in social work and in public health. His current research program is focused on LGBTIQ inclusion and human rights, and marriage equality in Asia. He also leads community-based research on HIV, sexual health and mental health with sexual and gender minorities and racialized populations in North America, Asia, and Africa. 

 

Dr. Newman also leads a longstanding research program at the intersections of social science and biomedicine, focused on vaccine acceptability, 'vaccine hesitancy', and structural barriers in access to vaccination--Covid-19, HPV, and future HIV vaccines, and community engagement among marginalized populations.

He serves as co-Editor-in-Chief of Sexual and Gender Diversity in Social Services; and on Editorial Boards of Culture, Health & Sexuality, Journal of the Society for Social Work Research, the Journal of Homosexuality, and the Vaccine Council of 100.
