BIO
Dr. York Pei is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at the University of Toronto; a Senior Scientist at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, University Health Network; and the Director of the Centre for Innovative Management of Polycystic Kidney Disease, University Health Network.
His research has primarily been focused on identifying the genetic factors responsible for the onset or progression of genetic kidney diseases as a target for creating new diagnostic procedures and treatments. His research programme is heavily concentrated on autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), with additional emphasis on genetic, genomic, and translational research of hereditary kidney diseases. Familial IgA nephropathy, familial nephrotic syndrome, and Alport syndrome are just a few of the other hereditary kidney diseases for which he has made significant contributions to genetic research. He has worked closely with scientists domestically and abroad, published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, and trained a large number of clinical and research fellows in hereditary kidney disease.
In 2015, he established the Centre for Innovative Management for Polycystic Kidney Disease, which offers novel therapeutics and advanced diagnostics for ADPKD. Over 500 patients are currently being monitored or co-managed at the facility, and over 95% of them are taking part in at least one study.
In 2019 for polycystic kidney disease, Dr. Pei shared the Lillian Jean Kaplan International Prize(link is external), and in 2020, the Kidney Foundation of Canada awarded him the Medal for Research Excellence.
