BIO
Mark Lautens, O.C., is a Professor of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto. His research programme is in the area of organic synthesis with an emphasis on the design of reactions which are highly stereo- and enantioselective. The central goal of his studies is to develop new methods and efficient strategies for the synthesis of bioactive compounds. His group focuses on carbon-carbon bond forming processes which efficiently create multiple stereocentres. Metal catalyzed reactions are of particular interest due to the ability to control reactivity by changing the metal and its ligands.
He has written multiple Opinions in the Globe & Mail and Toronto Star, focusing on increased support for research, the importance of research in tackling the most challenging societal problems, support for early career researchers, increased support for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
Media availability: TV, Radio, Print/Online
