BIO
Donald Jackson is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Professor Jackson's research focuses on the structure and composition of ecological communities in aquatic ecosystems. These aquatic ecosystems include relatively undisturbed lakes and rivers, as well as urban ecosystems such as rivers and stormwater ponds. Work is focused on understanding how the environmental conditions shapes the types of species found there (the ecological communities), and how environmental conditions influence the geographic distribution of species (e.g. climate and water temperatures may determine the northern or southern distributions of fishes). Research ranges in spatial scale from urban ecology studies within individual cities (e.g. water quality and ecological communities of stormwater ponds) to intercontinental comparisons of lake fish communities. Research interests also include species at risk (e.g. endangered species) and invasive species, again understanding how they may be influenced by the environmental conditions and how invasive species may alter the environment for other species.
