BIO
Daniel Posen is Associate Professor of Civil & Mineral Engineering and Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in System-Scale Environmental Impacts of Energy & Transport Technologies.
Drawing on academic training in Engineering & Public Policy, Economics, and Chemistry, Dr. Posen’s research uses a mix of technical and economic modeling to supply quantitative, system-level analysis to support environmental decision making. His expertise is grounded in the tools of life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle thinking, and energy system modeling, with application to a wide range of systems including fuel and chemical production, electric vehicles, electricity generation, infrastructure systems, and carbon dioxide removal technologies. He has a particular interest in assessing the large-scale sustainability consequences of technology deployment, including resource implications (e.g., energy, critical minerals), greenhouse gas emissions & carbon budgets, and other system-wide implications. He is currently leading an ambitious effort to develop and apply a new generation of decarbonization planning tools, centered on the Temoa Canadian Open Energy Model (CANOE) - to generate and assess cost-optimal pathways to meet Canada’s energy needs to 2050 and beyond.
Dr. Posen was a contributing author to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Working group III, Chapter 10: Transport), and is President of the Sustainability Conoscente Network and its subsidiary International Symposium for Sustainable Systems and Technologies. He has also served in numerous governance positions within the university including Associate Chair for Graduate Programs (Civil & Mineral Engineering), on the University Academic Board, and as Chair of multiple Standing Committees within the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering.
