BIO
Eliot Phillipson is the Sir John and Lady Eaton Professor of Medicine Emeritus at the University of Toronto. He received his MD with Distinction from the University of Alberta, and following postgraduate training in Internal Medicine undertook research training at the University of California, San Francisco.
In 1971 Dr. Phillipson was appointed to the University of Toronto as a clinician-scientist. His research focus on the regulation of respiration led to the formulation of a model of the control of breathing during sleep, and in 1978 he established one of the first human sleep laboratories in North America with a focus on breathing disturbances.
Dr. Phillipson has held the positions of Sir John and Lady Eaton Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, as well as Physician-in-Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital. He held the positions of President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation from 2004 to 2010. He has also held positions as President of the Canadian Institute of Academic Medicine, Co-Chair of the Gairdner Foundation's Medical Review Panel, and Chair of the Council of Canadian Academies' Expert Panel on the State of Science and Technology in Canada.
Dr. Phillipson is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and an elected member of the prestigious American Society for Clinical Investigation and Association of American Physicians. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Alberta.
