Dr. Stephen Hwang is a professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, with additional appointments at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. He is also a staff physician in the Division of General Internal Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital.

Dr. Hwang serves as Director of the MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions at St. Michael’s Hospital and is a scientist with the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute. In addition to his academic and leadership roles, he conducts a weekly clinic at Seaton House, a homeless shelter for men.

He holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Homelessness, Housing and Health and is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading researchers in this field. His groundbreaking work has reshaped how homelessness and precarious housing are understood in Canada, framing them as critical - and preventable - health crises.
