My research program focuses on developing and applying advanced simulation methods for assessing complex structural systems. Based on the concept of hybrid (experimental-numerical) simulation, this method integrates experimental elements from geographically distributed testing facilities with various numerical models using specialized analysis tools. By combining these physical and numerical elements, we achieve realistic response predictions of complex, nonlinear structural systems subjected to various loads, such as earthquakes, fires, and wind. My research group has developed a high-level framework, algorithms for integrated simulation, and a software package for integrating different numerical analysis tools. More details on the simulation framework can be found on our project website: www.ut-sim.ca.
Initially, our research on the hybrid simulation method focused on assessing nonlinear structural systems subjected to strong ground motions. Since 2014, we have extended this approach to evaluate structures subjected to fire and wind loads. For fire-exposed structures, accurately modeling the behavior of structural elements at high temperatures is extremely challenging. By integrating experimental specimens with numerical models of the remaining system, we significantly improve the accuracy of system-level assessments. In developing the hybrid fire simulation method, we overcame various challenges to enhance its robustness.
For structures subjected to wind loads, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of wind-structure interactions are often time-consuming and inaccurate. Representing wind-structure interactions experimentally—while integrating these experiments with numerical models of the structural system—improves the accuracy of dynamic response predictions. My research group has designed novel experimental apparatus by integrating linear motors, motor drives, real-time controllers, and other advanced components which were previously unexplored in this field. We developed two apparatuses: one for high-rise buildings and another for bridge decks. Our research group is among the first in the world to explore hybrid fire simulation and hybrid wind simulation.
In addition to the topics on hybrid simulation, my research group has conducted various projects including leak rate tests of reinforced concrete containment structures of nuclear power plants, the long-term performance of nuclear containment buildings, seismic soil-structure-interaction simulations, floor response spectra prediction models, climate impact on power transmission network, etc.
