Roger Newman is UNENE Research Chair in 'Corrosion and Materials Performance in Nuclear Power Systems'. His research interests are mainly in the area of corrosion and protection of metals. He also has a long-standing activity in metallic nanomaterials, specifically nanoporous metals. He has worked extensively with the nuclear power, oil-and-gas, and pulp-and-paper industries.

Roger obtained his bachelor's and doctoral degrees from the University of Cambridge, UK. Then he spent several years as a researcher at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the USA, before joining the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST, now part of the new University of Manchester), where he worked for 20 years before joining UofT in 2004. He has received many international awards and fellowships for his work in corrosion, from societies such as NACE International (USA), the Electrochemical Society (USA), DECHEMA (Germany), IoM3 (UK), and the Institute of Corrosion (UK).
