BIO

Professor Ashley Stirling is an Associate Professor, Teaching Stream and the Vice-Dean, Programs at the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto. Professor Stirling is known internationally for her research in sports coaching, specifically on positive athlete development, safeguarding athlete welfare and interpersonal violence in sports. Applying her research to practice, she has developed and evaluated national coach education initiatives for the Coaches Association of Ontario, the Coaching Association of Canada, the Association of Canadian Women & Sport, the U.S. Childhelp and Global Sports. She has also served as an expert advisor for several local, national and international sports and governance organizations including the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, the Canadian Association for Sport and Exercise Medicine, the U.S. Centre for Safe Sport and the European Union High Level Group on Gender Equality in Sport.

Professor Stirling is also an internationally esteemed scholar and leader in the area of experiential education and work-integrated learning. Working in collaboration with the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario, she is known for the highly cited practical guide for work-integrated learning on effective practices to enhance the educational quality of structured work experiences offered through colleges and universities. She regularly delivers invited keynote presentations at institutions across Canada and internationally on advancing higher education experiential learning and work-integrated learning and has held several leadership appointments in the field including senior editorial board member for the International Journal of Work-Integrated Learning (IJWIL), Chair of the Research Committee for Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL), and member of the World Association of Co-operative Education, International Research Committee (WACE-IRC). She has worked with faculty and staff across a range of disciplines and curricular/co-curricular domains and across university and college sectors to advance experiential and work-integrated learning opportunities of high academic quality.
