Dr. Gilbert is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) where she holds the Canada Research Chair in Endogenous Repair. She is cross-appointed to the Donnelly Centre and the Department of Cell & Systems Biology. Dr. Gilbert obtained her BSc from Haverford College (1999) and her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (2006). She conducted postdoctoral studies with Helen Blau at Stanford University in the area of skeletal muscle stem cells with the support of an NIH Pathway to Independence K99 Award.

Dr. Gilbert was recruited to the University of Toronto in 2012. Her interdisciplinary team explores muscle stem cell mechanobiology and engineers three-dimensional human skeletal muscle culture models with the goal of identifying signalling pathways that can be tweaked to boost the function of muscle stem cells residing in skeletal muscle tissue.
