Seth Bernard is a Roman historian and archaeologist. His work focuses broadly on the society and economy of ancient Italy and the Roman Mediterranean with interests in labor history, pre-Roman Italy, and the Roman Republican period. He has taught at Toronto since 2014 and holds a BA in Classics from Amherst College and a PhD in Ancient History from the University of Pennsylvania. He has been a Regular Member of the American School for Classical Studies at Athens (2004-5) and a Rome Prize Fellow of the American Academy in Rome (2010-11). His work is particularly interested in using new approaches drawn from science, social sciences, archaeology, and anthropology to expand our understanding of the Roman and pre-Roman past. His first monograph, Building Mid-Republican Rome: Architecture, Labor, and the Urban Economy 396 - 164 BCE (Oxford Press) came out in 2018. He has co-edited with Lisa Mignone and Dan-el Padilla Peralta a new volume, Making the Middle Republic: New Approaches to Rome and Italy, c. 400-200 BCE (Cambridge Press, 2023). And a second monograph, Historical Culture in Iron Age Italy (Oxford Press) will appear later this year. Recent publication projects focus on Roman labor history, Iron Age Italy, and the climate history of Italy during the first millennium BCE. He is also active with archaeological fieldwork and co-directs excavations at the ancient urban site of Falerii Novi in Italy.
