BIO
Dr. Yuhong He is a Professor in the Department of Geography, Geomatics, and Environment at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). Her research focuses on investigating changes that have occurred in natural (grasslands, forests, wetlands) or managed (farmlands and urban) systems using remote sensing, machine learning, and ecosystem modelling. She has mobilized multidisciplinary researchers and collaborated with cross-sectoral practitioners for the common goals of understanding how human activities and global changes affect environments and discovering how to make our natural/built environments healthier, more resilient, and adaptable. Her work has been supported by major grants from various internal and external sources, including NSERC, CFI, ERA, CSA, et al. Dr. Yuhong He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and presented over 100 papers at national and international conferences. In 2018, Dr. He co-edited a book entitled High Spatial Resolution Remote Sensing: Data, Techniques, and Applications (CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group). Dr. He's research was awarded the Desmond Morton Research Excellence Award at UTM in 2022, received the Early Researcher Award of Ontario in 2015, and received the Early Career Scholar Award from the Remote Sensing Specialty Group at the AAG 2011 annual meeting. Dr. Yuhong He has served as an associate editor for the ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and the Journal of Applied Remote Sensing. She has also served as an editorial advisory board member of the Environment Management, and a guest editor for the International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation and the journal Remote Sensing. Dr. He currently serves as co-chair of working group 4 for awards and a Director of the Canadian Remote Sensing Society, and her past service included as Director of Remote Sensing Specialty Group in AAG (2012-2014). Dr. He has extensive interdisciplinary research collaborations, and her research partners are seen from local conservation authorities (e.g., Credit Valley Conservation), federal government organizations (e.g., AAFC, Environment Canada, and Parks Canada), and private companies. Dr. He's former students have successfully gone on to remote sensing careers in academics, government, and industry. Her teaching and supervision performance is recognized by the E. A. Robinson Teaching Excellence Award in 2017 t UTM.
