BIO
Dr. Peter Wells is a Professor at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy and Department at the University of Toronto. He is also cross appointed at the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology and the Collaborative Programs in Neuroscience and Environmental Studies. He completed his Pharm.D. from the University of Minnesota and his Post-Doctorate from Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Wells’ research focuses on the body’s adverse reactions to drugs and environmental chemicals, and to forms of activated oxygen in the body, termed reactive oxygen species (ROS), that are essential for life but can cause disease in predisposed people. By investigating the molecular and biochemical pathways of these reactions, Dr. Wells is working to explain the genetic and environmental determinants of susceptibility to disease and chemical toxicity. This includes a number of both drug-induced and spontaneous diseases such as cancer, neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases.
Dr. Wells has published numerous impactful pieces of work in his field. He has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and honours including the Josef Warkany Lecture Award from the Society for Birth Defects Research & Prevention, the Scientific Achievement Award from the Society of Toxicology, and the Gabriel L. Plaa Award of Distinction from the Society of Toxicology of Canada.
