Dr. Samir Grover is a gastroenterologist, clinician-educator, and education researcher whose career has been defined by building the simulation and technology-enhanced learning infrastructure that trains the next generation of physicians, and by translating that work into practice. He serves as Executive Vice-President, Academics at Scarborough Health Network (SHN), where he holds the hospital's inaugural Pialis Family Chair in Education.

 

Dr. Grover is leading a large expansion of community-based health professions education in Scarborough. He directs SHN's academic enterprise as the network works with the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH) to anchor a new University of Toronto medical academy, and new nurse practitioner, physician assistant, and physical therapy programs serving the country's most diverse community. 

 

Dr. Grover's research program is anchored in simulation, virtual reality, and technology-enhanced learning in gastrointestinal endoscopy, and he is among the first investigators to design, evaluate, and validate curricular virtual reality simulation in this field. His lab performed among the first trials demonstrating the simulation in endoscopy had an impact on technical and non-technical performance in the first real procedures done by novices. Building on this foundation, his laboratory extends technology-enhanced learning into ambient performance assessment, video-based feedback, gamification of procedural training, and low-cost simulation platforms for worldwide scaling. The University of Toronto Endoscopic Simulation Course, which he founded and ran for more than sixteen years, operationalizes these principles and has become a template for procedural training programs internationally.

 

From 2018 to 2023, Dr. Grover directed the Adult Gastroenterology Residency Program at the University of Toronto, building Canada's largest gastroenterology training program. He modernized its competency-based framework and embedded mastery-based simulation curricula across training sites. Most recently, Dr. Grover has established one of Canada's most active pipelines for training clinician-builders for the AI era. His Summer of Vibes innovation program pairs students from medicine, engineering, design, and business to ship working AI prototypes in real clinical settings. Across nearly two decades, he has mentored over one hundred and fifty learners, including residents and fellows who now hold faculty and leadership positions at academic centres in Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

 

Dr. Grover is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association, the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. His teaching has been recognized with numerous local, national, and international awards across his career.
