BIO
Dr. Marcus Law is a Professor of Family Medicine at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. He has taken on numerous roles at the university, such as Academic Lead in Educational Technology, Director of Preclerkship Renewal, Director of Foundations, and currently serves as the Associate Dean of the MD Program. Additionally, he has held the role of Director of Technology-Enabled Learning at the Centre for Faculty Development. At the national level, Dr. Law has been actively involved with the Canadian Association for Medical Education, most recently serving as President.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Dr. Law immigrated to Canada with his family and settled in Toronto, where he completed an undergraduate Pharmacology degree. Dr. Law remained in Toronto to complete his medical degree in 2000 and a Family Medicine residency at Michael Garron Hospital, where he went on to become the Director of Medical Education. Dr. Law holds an MBA from the W. P. Carey School of Business and a Master of Education from the University of Toronto.
Dr. Law's academic work and research focus on translating our understanding of how medical students develop expertise into effective educational design and implementing theory-informed large-scale curricular development in medical schools. His professional commitment is to a systems approach to medical education and advancing new pedagogical approaches suitable for contemporary learners (e.g., teaching methods other than direct instruction, technology-based learning approaches, and self-directed learning). As a Teacher, Dr. Law aims to develop skilled and compassionate physicians by providing optimal educational training that meets the learners’ needs while supporting them in their journey as lifelong learners. Dr. Law’s teaching and leadership in the MD Program have been recognized with several awards for program development and coordination, as well as the highest honour for teaching at the University of Toronto, the President’s Teaching Award, in 2025.
Dr. Law’s strong interest in technology and subsequent exploration of how to intelligently and meaningfully integrate technology into medical education led to the creation of the new Foundations curriculum for the preclerkship years 1 and 2. He has also contributed to further initiatives following his Foundations Director role as Associate Dean. As an innovator, Dr. Law has pursued large-scale curriculum reform and technological integration, continually seeking and applying new solutions in medical education. As a leader, he has collaboratively guided interdisciplinary research teams, including medical and health professions learners, on various research projects aimed at advancing the field of medical education.
Dr. Law’s dedication to medical education has resulted in numerous peer-reviewed publications, invited lectures, and presentations (many of which are international), through which he has shared his curricular innovations with the medical education community. His most significant contributions to undergraduate medical education, mentorship, and continuing education include leading a major curriculum renewal and ensuring supportive learning environments and cultures at Temerty Medicine and within the broader medical education community.
In his leadership roles with the Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME), Dr. Law has advanced scholarly medical education by cultivating a strong community and supporting CAME members through a podcast geared toward helping clinical teachers apply scholarship in health sciences education to their teaching, as well as a webinar series that includes a subset focused on vital topics of equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and anti-oppression in Health Professions Education. Dr. Law has mentored numerous current and future medical educators, fostering the continuous improvement of medical education. He has worked to establish a community of practice for medical educators, promoting excellence and scholarship across all facets of medical education.
